Tree planting is a significant investment. Making Tree planting is a significant investment. Making sure they are planted correctly is critically important to protect that investment. Consider hiring a certified arborist to plant your trees. Today we planted 14 trees and shrubs at this Peterborough property. We handle and move trees with low impact methods. We like wide planting holes and careful depth measurements to ensure long term success. We remove all the material from rootballs and root prune as needed. We fill with native soil or loam that has been tested in our in-house lab. Fertilizer, water, and mulch to top it off.
Want a cool nature lesson? These interesting looki Want a cool nature lesson? These interesting looking spots on this red maple leaf aren't caused by a fungal or bacterial infection, but instead are a unique relationship between an animal and plant. There is a small fly called an eyespot midge that lays it's eggs on the underside of maple leaves. When they hatch the larvae secrete a chemical that mimics a plant growth hormone. This creates a protective gall around the larvae, where it can feed before exiting to pupate. You will likely either find the splash of color interesting or unsightly, but whatever your opinion, you can rest assured that these flies wont do lasting harm to your trees.

We contracted out our 75' bucket truck with an operator to the Hart Brothers all week to do risk mitigation for camp Takodah. We love collaborating with our "competitors". By sharing different methods and allowing an outside perspective we improve industry practices in our target market.

I don't recall a specific moment when I knew that I don't recall a specific moment when I knew that I wanted to be an arborist. But this week I had the pleasure of working with @hartbrotherstreeservice doing risk mitigation for @camptakodah where I spent many summers as a kid. Working above the ropes course I remember back to those years being on this same course and feeling at home high up in the trees.
Check out this tree we removed today in Peterborou Check out this tree we removed today in Peterborough! 🤯 The decay and woodpecker damage had gone unnoticed until the property owner started thinning trees nearby over the weekend. It looks bad to the layperson, but anyone who understands tree structure and decay knows just how close this was to failing onto the house! Extensive decay on the tension side of a leaning hardwood with horizontal checking are huge red flags. This indicates significant breakdown of cellulose, which is the primary support system in hardwoods. Think of cellulose as the cables on a suspension bridge while lignin would be support columns. This decay consumed all the cellulose leaving only lignin behind. Another way to think of it would be if you built this tree out of Lego bricks. Imagine how easy that would be to push over!

We had to do the job on a day that school was closed, work with the town to maintain a lane of traffic, and coordinate with neighboring properties that we would affect. Hours of emails and phone calls for a job that took about 50 minutes!

Today the bucket truck crew did dead ash removals in Nelson while another team did preservation work in Jaffrey. This big oak received dead wood pruning and a support system. Kudos to the teams for working through the steady rain!
I wrote our business plan more than seven years ag I wrote our business plan more than seven years ago and update it annually. I'm proud to say that the first two pages of our vision and mission statement section have not changed in that time. While our aspirations are ever evolving, I believe firmly in the principles that founded this company and grew it to where it is today. This year's business plan revision paves the pathway for some dramatic and exciting growth. Thank you to our beloved customers, community, and supporters who make this journey possible!
Many people are surprised to learn that trees have Many people are surprised to learn that trees have flowers on them. This is in part because those flowers can be far off the ground and out of sight, but also because they can be less showy due to the way pollen is spread. Your garden flowers and some trees (like cherry and apple) pollinate using insects. This is called entomophily and requires the plant to have a colorful attractive flowers. Most trees (like the pictured ash) use wind to spread pollen. This is called anemophily and is a major contributor to those seasonal allergies! Typically flowers on trees are small, green or red, and easy to mistake for buds or leaves until viewed up close.
