The crew did a fantastic job preserving this beautiful lawn in Peterborough yesterday. Using our ground protection mats and low impact tracked machines they were able to access and remove large dead ash and maple trees.👏

When lightning storms come through we hault production. That doesn't mean we send everyone home though. We used this afternoon's storm to review and inventory the first aid kits. Then we took a deep dive into controling life threatening blood loss. We practiced self application and assisted application of tourniquets, reviewed wound packing and use of coagulants, and practiced applying dressings and bandages with pressure.

The Witch-Hazel Cone Gall Aphid is responsible for these growths, which ironically look a lot like a witch's hat. Adult aphids inject witch hazel leaves, stimulating a protective gall to grow around them. This provides a safe home to raise young (seen inside a gall in photo #2) While unsightly, these aphids rarely cause damage to plants.

We are so sad to hear of the passing of our friend and colleague Andrew Grant in a work accident this past week. A tremendous loss for the Monadnock area and the tree care community. Despite being "competitors" he preferred to collaborate: Sharing his methods, lending his equipment, and teaming up on jobs. On several occasions we were down a chipper or a truck and without hesitation Andy would offer up one of his. Rest easy brother 🌳

Did you know that we do our diagnostic work in house? It allows for really fast turn around times at affordable cost. We collected this sample from a yew today and used a microscope to confirm the presence of yew needle blight hyphae and spores (pictured). The symptoms of yew needle blight and root rot are similar. With very different treatments and prognosis it is critical to get the diagnosis right. You can see the sample collected and the small black fruiting bodies that we scraped for analysis. A single arborist can usually process 4 to 5 samples in an hour, not including report writing, which makes this a very affordable option for your plant health care needs! 🤓🧑‍🔬

These trees were impacted by some site work at a construction project in Dublin. A large portion of the root zone was severed for drainage and underground electrical conduit. No excavation or grade change should occur within the critical root zone of trees without consulting with an arborist. The critical root zone is 1 foot away from the trunk per inch of trunk diameter. The work on these trees resulted in an active failure and endangered the newly finished house. We removed the trees.

Good intentions led to a sad result for this peach

Good intentions led to a sad result for this peach tree. After a couple years of porqupine damage, flashing had been placed around the tree trunk by the owner. The porqupine problem was solved and the flashing forgotten. As the tree grew, it ran out of room, crushing it's own inner bark layer and starving itself of nutrients. It took a single growing season. Every pest problem and mitigation route requires routine monitoring. Use trunk wraps and trunk guards as short term solutions only and check them frequently.

Plucking pine trees whole, like weeds in a garden. We spent two days on this Peterborough property removing over 60 pine trees. The trees were growing close to the house and with changing weather patterns the homeowners were becoming less comfortable with the risk they posed.

Tree planting is a significant investment. Making sure they are planted correctly is critically important to protect that investment. Consider hiring a certified arborist to plant your trees. Today we planted 14 trees and shrubs at this Peterborough property. We handle and move trees with low impact methods. We like wide planting holes and careful depth measurements to ensure long term success. We remove all the material from rootballs and root prune as needed. We fill with native soil or loam that has been tested in our in-house lab. Fertilizer, water, and mulch to top it off.

Want a cool nature lesson? These interesting looking spots on this red maple leaf aren't caused by a fungal or bacterial infection, but instead are a unique relationship between an animal and plant. There is a small fly called an eyespot midge that lays it's eggs on the underside of maple leaves. When they hatch the larvae secrete a chemical that mimics a plant growth hormone. This creates a protective gall around the larvae, where it can feed before exiting to pupate. You will likely either find the splash of color interesting or unsightly, but whatever your opinion, you can rest assured that these flies wont do lasting harm to your trees.
